Watch: Shreyas Iyer Slogs Nathan Ellis For A Huge Six Over Mid-Wicket To Reach Innings-Rescuing Fifty

Watch: Shreyas Iyer slogged Nathan Ellis across the line for a big six in the final over of India’s innings to reach his eighth T20I fifty in the fifth T20I of the IND vs AUS series at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru today (December 3).

India lost the toss and were sent to bat on a cloudy night with light rain. On an unusually sticky Bengaluru wicket, the Australian bowlers bowled well to set up India’s batting order.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was the first to die after hitting two blistering pull shots off six balls. He fell on 21 off his 15, but Ben his Dwarshas hit Ruturaj with a middle straight to his Gaikwad in his fifth over to reduce India to his 33-2.

Suryakumar Yadav, who is usually flamboyant, was also not in a good mood. After being denied a catch at the start, it was at this point that Ben McDermott was given a second chance, which was happily accepted. Rinku Singh then attempted a tackle on Tanveer Sangha as India fell to 55-4 in 9.1 overs.

Iyer, who came to bat at number three, teamed up with Jitesh Sharma for the fifth wicket. The latter took over the bowling and Iyer stayed put and led the innings from one end.

At one point, he was hitting 12 of 15 pitches, but he broke the shackles by hitting his first six pitches. It was a loose lofted drive over long-off in the 11th over.

He then maintained his momentum in the second half of the Indian innings and never looked back. Iyer scored 34 for 27 at the start of the 17th over and in his last 10 balls he added 19 runs to take India to his 150th over.

He reached his fifty thanks to a muscular swipe on the second ball of the final over, taking Nathan Ellis’ slow ball to the back of his hand and sending it over mid-wicket. Ellis soon retaliated by castled Iyer’s stumps with an unplayable yorker two balls later, but by then Iyer had done his job and led India to a competitive total.

India scored 53 runs off Iyer’s bat in just 37 balls and finished the match with 160 for 8.
