The start of the first innings of the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup was a statistical highlight. England, sent to bat by New Zealand, scored 282-9 in 50 overs. For the first time in ODI cricket history, all 11 batsmen scored more than his 10 runs in his innings.

Joe Root top-scored, securing the innings with 77 off 86 balls. England’s second highest scorer was captain Jos Buttler. Buttler entered the match at number six to counter the New Zealand left-arm spinnerafter promoting Moeen Ali to number five.
Buttler, along with Root, forged a 70-run partnership for the fifth wicket, taking England to 188-5 with mostly run-a-balls, but only with 43 off 42 balls (two fours and a six). (including two pitches) and was sent off.
One of the two sixes was a straight hit from James Neesham in the 29th over of the innings. A full slot delivery over the stumps was unceremoniously slammed over the bowler’s head by Buttler for a six. Sachin Tendulkar, who was in the commentary box at the time, was also impressed.
“It’s a great shot. I kept the momentum going. It wasn’t a wild swing. It was about choosing the length,” Tendulkar said.
England’s batting depth ultimately paid off as they scored a total of 94 points with their last four wickets, reaching over 280 and giving New Zealand a competitive target.
