Feliciano Lopez issues Carlos Alcaraz warning: ‘Let’s value him’
Feliciano López has warned that Carlos Alcaraz and his career achievements should not be defined by comparisons with Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
For the past 15 years, men’s tennis has been completely dominated by the “Big 3”, who have won 66 major tournaments.
We seem to be coming out of that era now, with Federer already retired and Nadal seemingly preparing for his final season on the ATP Tour. Djokovic is now 36 years old, but he still maintains his momentum.
There’s a reason why 20-year-old Alcaraz is attracting attention as the next big star in tennis. He already has his two major wins under his belt and is looking to increase that number in 2024.
However, his compatriot López says they must be careful not to let what Djokovic, Federer and Nadal have achieved set the bar too high for others.
Carlos Alcaraz ‘incredibly good’
“At this age, he had already won two Grand Slams and was world number one,” Lopez told AS.
“He’s one of those players that comes along every few years. But of course we tend to compare him to Roger, Rafa, Novak. People don’t realize what they’ve done .
“What would happen if Alcaraz won 15 tournaments? It wouldn’t be that big of a deal, would it? In fact, Sampras was only 14 years old not too long ago, when a player from Manacor won 14 tournaments (Roland Garros). title).
“I lived this time. I played against them. What happened will never happen again, the chances of it happening are very low.
“I have to say, it’s incredible to see three Michael Jordans together every 15 years.” Alcaraz is incredibly good. He has no explanation for these three.
“Let’s enjoy Alcaraz and his career, and only time will tell if he wins 10, 12 or 13, but let’s give him credit.< /p>
“I’ve never seen a player his age play so well. I don’t know if Federer played like Carlos when he was 20.”
