David Warner may not play ODI cricket again, but his has been a career to celebrate, and will leave behind memories to cherish.
In mid-2022, David Warner declared that the home series against Pakistan would be his last match in Test cricket. Now, before the last Test match, healso announced his retirement from ODIs.
A modern-day great
Warner’s numbers – 6,932 runs at 45.30 with a strike rate of 97 – place him in the pantheon of modern-day greats in the format. No Australian has scored more of his ODI runs at a higher average strong>.
This is not just a story for Australians. Apart from AB de Villiers (9,577 runs, 53.50 and 101), he cannot beat Warner in all three parameters: runs, average and strike rate.
On average, even when restrictions are removed, only de Villiers, Shahid Afridi and Virender Sehwag have higher runs and strike rates than Warner.
Warner’s 2200 is the 10th most in history and second most by an Australian behind Ricky Ponting’s 29. Opening batsmen (28), Hashim Amla (27) and Chris Gayle have done better.
Scoring big
Warner reached 55 times, but converted 22 of them (40%) into hundreds. This is the third highest conversion rate among batsmen scoring 50 or more runs after Virat Kohli (41 per cent – 50 out of 122) and Hashim Amla (40.9 per cent – 27 out of 66).
What makes Warner even more remarkable is his ability to convert even hundreds ofpeople. He never crossed 179 against Pakistan in Adelaide in 2016/17, but that was after scores of 163, 178 and 173, before that he hit 166 and by the time of the 2023 World Cup he had hit 163. Ta. He is actually the only batsman whose six ODI scores are higher than his 160 strong>.
At the biggest stage
Three of Warner’s 160+ goals have come in World Cups – 178 against Afghanistan in 2015, 166 against Bangladesh in 2019 and 163 against Pakistan in 2023. These are his second, fourth and fifth goals. Highest score by an Australian player in the World Cup. Before the 2023 World Cup, Warner occupied the top two spots.
Warner’s 600 points is also the most for Australia at a World Cup, but he is tied with Ponting for the most points of 50 or more (11). And Steve Smith. His six of his 41 is second only to Glenn Maxwell’s 41, but no one can match his four of his 154.
At the world level, Warner also scored thesixth most runs in the World Championships andsecond most hundredths and4 He has the second highest record of 6times. . Only Rohit (1,575 runs at 60.57 and 105) has scored more runs at a better average and strike rate than Warner (1,527 at 56.55 and 101).
When the going gets tough
Perhaps the most unique feature of Warner’s ODI career was his ability to win against the toughest opponents. Against England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa, Warner scored his 4,935 runs at 44.06 and he scored 99. This is about the same as his career average.
No player has achieved all three digits against the top six opponents (Australia provides the entire set). However, de Villiers (52.52 and 97) and Kohli (53.81 and 92) have scored more runs per round. Although it was late, we achieved the dismissal.
