CAF snubs Nigerian referees in 2023 AFCON officiating list

Super Eagles have already secured qualification to AFCON, but Nigerian referees will not take part in the competition

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has removed a Nigerian referee from the list of referees for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Ivory Coast, Soccer Net reported.

In January 2023, 24 countries will compete for the most coveted prize in African football. The Super Eagles will travel to Ivory Coast in search of his fourth title in Africa.

On Tuesday, CAF announced the list of competition judges who will complete the preparatory course for next year’s AFCON. However, there were no Nigerian referees on the list.

Judges from Algeria, Kenya, Ethiopia, Congo, Mali, Chad, Mauritius, Burundi, Djibouti, Lesotho, Somalia, Republic of Benin, Madagascar, Sao Tome and Principe, and other African countries are participating. A total of 32 referees and his 33 assistant referees were invited to the tournament.

Four Video Assistant Referees (VARs) from Morocco, Egypt, South Africa and Mauritius were also invited to the preparation course. Unfortunately, not a single referee is from Nigeria.

The last time a Nigerian referee refereed a Nations Cup match was in 2006, and this is the 18th consecutive year that a Nigerian referee has refereed a Nations Cup match.
