‘You’re Supposed To Play First-Class Cricket’ – Sourav Ganguly ‘Surprised’ At Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer Reportedly Not Playing Ranji Trophy

Former Indian captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly expressed “surprise” at Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan skipping the Ranji Trophy.

To the surprise of many, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were not included in BCCI’s annual player retention agreement for the Indian senior men’s team for 2023-24.

In an interview with RevSportz, Sourav Ganguly said that He explained the incident as follows. BCCI wants them to play first-class cricket. I was surprised that Shreyas Iyer did not play in the Ranji Trophy. This is the most important tournament. You’d better play. This is his BCCI decision. What they thought was right was actually done. The players have to play first-class cricket. That is the basis of cricket in this country. ”

Ganguly did not mince words when talking about Kishan’s decision to skip the Ranji Trophy match in Jharkhand despite being asked to do so. “This is wrong. You should be playing first-class cricket. It’s the most important competition in the country. You’re a contract player and once you’re a contract player, you’re expected to play.

“Shreyas Iyer will play in the [Ranji Trophy] semi-final (Mumbai vs. Tamil Nadu),” Ganguly added. “[But] I was surprised by Ishan Kishan. He has been part of the Indian team in all formats, be it one-day cricket, Test cricket, big contracts like the IPL… I don’t understand why he did that. No. Especially when you have a talent like Ishan Kishan, you have to play.”

Ganguly recalled the importance of Ranji Trophy in his career (he played for India from 1991-92 to 2008). You played for India in the Ranji Trophy. Ranji He cannot think of anyone not taking part in the trophy. ”

He defended BCCI’s decision and said, “As the parent body of this country, BCCI has taken this position and rightly so.”When you sign a contract, you have to play by the rules. It must be done.”
