The 2023 World Cup is being played across ten venues, twelve if you include the venues for the warm-up games as well. Here is how much each team will be travelling through the course of the tournament.
Afghanistan – 5311 kms
Afghanistan will play consecutive matches at the same venue during the World Cup league matches, so the amount of travel will be the least. However, the mileage increases to 9,456 km if warm-up matches are included, as the warm-up matches were held at opposite ends of the country, Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram.
New Zealand – 5826 kms
New Zealand has a relatively easy travel schedule compared to other teams. Three consecutive matches will be played at the same venue in Chennai, Dharamsala and Bengaluru. However, like in Afghanistan, the distance will increase significantly if warm-up matches are taken into account. 8,488 km to be exact.
Pakistan – 6880 kms
Pakistan’s schedule was one of the most complex, given the logistical and political concerns at specific venues. Four matches, including two warm-up matches, will be played in Hyderabad, reducing the travel distance to less than 7,000km.
Australia – 6915 kms
Although Australia only play at one venue twice, their total distance traveled is shorter than many other teams due to the relatively short distance between venues in back-to-back matches. It runs from Delhi to Dharamshala (406 km), Ahmedabad to Mumbai (450 km) and Mumbai to Pune (119 km).
Netherlands – 6925 kms
Netherlands played their first two matches in Hyderabad, but they have to travel nearly 7,000 kilometers for World Cup league matches. Including warm-up matches, the distance increases to 7,915 km.
Bangladesh – 7334 kms
Bangladesh will begin their World Cup campaign with two matches in Dharamsala to ease the burden on their travel schedule. However, for the third match, they will have to travel a whopping 2,163 km from Dharamsala to Chennai. Including warm-up matches, the total distance traveled will be approximately 9,000 km.
Sri Lanka – 7680 kms
Sri Lanka is in the middle of the list. The longest route will be between Lucknow and Bangalore (1,581 km) and the shortest route will be between Pune and Mumbai. However, since you have to travel from Guwahati to Delhi, the total distance increases to 9,144 km if you include the warm-up matches.
South Africa – 7799 kms
South Africa will play two matches in Mumbai during the World Cup. Furthermore, in the main race he will have to travel a distance of over 1,000 km four times, and including the warm-up he will have to travel five times, a total distance of over 10,000 km.
England – 8106 kms
England will be the second most traveled team during the World Cup. His two trips, between Bangalore and Lucknow (1,581 km) and between Pune and Kolkata (1,575 km), cover over 1,500 km. Including the warm-up schedule, the distance traveled increases to 10,076 km, which is also his second-longest distance among all 10 teams.
India – 9767 kms
India will of course be the busiest away team in the home World Cup. The distance difference between India and England, the next closest team, is more than 1,600 km. If India includes the warm-up movement diagonally across the country, India’s total distance traveled is over 12,000 km.
