Super Eagles prospect shows impressive scoring ability against Dutch giants after overcoming early struggles in the country
Ajax Amsterdam winger Steven Berghaus praised Chuba Akpom’s excellent heading skills after scoring against Vitesse on Saturday night, Soccernet.ng reported.
The Dutch giants achieved their biggest win of the season by defeating Vitesse 5-0 at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
Akpom scored Ajax’s fourth goal of the match as the former Middlesbrough attacker headed the ball home from a corner. This was his fifth goal in the same game for the club he joined in the summer.
The Arsenal academy product already played a role in Ajax’s third goal, with his presence forcing Dominik Orosz to concede an own goal.
Akpom’s header against Vitesse was Ajax’s second, following his header from a corner kick in the 2-0 home win against FC Volendam on November 2nd.
Berghaus is pleased that Akpom has good heading skills, which Ajax have been lacking since the departures of Edson Alvarez, Lisandro Martinez and Sebastien Haller .
According to Voetbalzone, Berghuis told ESPN: “With the departure of Edson Álvarez, Lisandro Martínez and Sebastien Haller, we have lost a lot of strength in the air.”
“Today, there is basically only Chuba Akpom, who is smart.”
Berghuis was satisfied with the result, which led Ajax to eighth place in the Eredivisie.
“The result was good and we got some great goals, so it was a good night.” We must aim for such a result. Overall it went very well.
“I’m starting to see more and more structure in the game, especially on the ball.” I think you can see that. Even if we lose the ball, we can still improve a lot. We need to continue to mentor each other. Our team is very young. ”
Akpom and Ajax are scheduled to return to the pitch on Thursday after traveling to France to face Marseille in Round 5 of the UEFA Europa League.
Ajax have two points from four games in Group B and need to win their remaining two games to have a chance of qualifying for the knockout stages.
