Both teams are aiming for their first win in qualifying, and the Warriors will test their mettle against the Super Eagles in Rwanda.
Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Nigeria, Stade de Reims midfielder Marshall Munetsi has expressed Zimbabwe’s determination to face the Super Eagles at Hue Stadium in Butare on Sunday.
Despite being considered the underdogs against Bartemar Brito’s side, Munetsi exudes confidence in Zimbabwe’s ability to disrupt their formidable opponents.
On Wednesday, Zimbabwe were held to a goalless draw with Rwanda and watched Nigeria suffer a disappointing 1-1 draw at home with Lesotho.
Munezi pointed to a potential advantage, noting Nigeria would have limited recovery time after playing 24 hours after the Warriors game. He believes this could be beneficial for Zimbabwe.
In a statement to the Herald, Munetsi acknowledged the challenges ahead, saying:
“The game against Nigeria will be a good challenge and I’m sure it will be a game with a good margin.”
“They played on Thursday and didn’t have much time to recover, so they can use that to their advantage.”
Despite the absence of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, Nigeria will have Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface, Leicester City star Kelechi Iheanacho, OGC Nice star Terem Moffi and Real – You can rely on Sociedad hitman Umar Sadiq.
Munezi acknowledged the Super Eagles’ star-studded line-up and stressed the importance of strategic planning.
“Of course, there are famous players on the team, but it may be difficult for them to adapt, even if they don’t have much time to rest and travel a lot.”
“You just need to be confident and have a good game plan to get the most points.”
Nigeria has won four and drawn two of their last six matches against Zimbabwe.
