Watch: Highly rated South Africa batter Tristan Stubbs hit his maiden first-class triple hundred for Warriors against KwaZulu-Natal Inland in South Africa’s four-day competition.
The 23-year-old is considered one of the most exciting young players in world cricket, making his South African debut in all three formats. He signed his IPL contract before playing any international matches, which is unusual for a cricketer, and has excelled in both List A and T20 cricket, with an average in the former. He has a record of 45 or higher, a strike rate of 90 or higher, and an average hit rate of 20. The latter is his 28th out of 151 points.
He made his Test debut earlier this year in the infamous second Test against India, which was the shortest completed Test in history, but his first-class results before this week had been modest at 400 in 17 matches. There were, but on average they weren’t all that impressive. Less than 40. In time, he increased his average to above his 50.
Stubbs came into the game when his team was in trouble and the score was 20-2. Together with Matthew Britske, another South African youngster who has recently made a name for himself, he scored 473 runs, the sixth-highest three-wicket stand in first-class history. Blitzke, who finished third in the SA20 running charts in 2024, reached a new first-class best with 188 points, but it was Stubbs who dominated the scoring, mixing drives and flicks with reverse sweeps and scoops. Combined.
Brietzke went down when Stubbs still needed 15 points to complete the triple, but he soon reached the milestone along with Sinethemba Kesire.
At the end of the second day, when play was marred by inclement weather, the Warriors were 517-3.
