Watch: Suryakumar Yadav ramped Cameron Green for six en route to his first ODI fifty of the year in the first ODI against Australia in Mohali today (September 22).
Chasing 277, India won the first ODI of the three-match series against Australia and got off to a great start thanks to Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad. Gaikwad scored in the first half of his first ODI and Gill continued his good form.
India’s first wicket fell at a score of 142 when Gaikwad dismissed Adam Zampa in the 22nd over. India suffered a small collapse losing his 4 wickets for 43 runs in his next 10.5 overs.
Suryakumar Yadav, who has struggled in ODIs this year, came on at No. 6 in the 33rd over with India needing 92 runs off 105 balls.
Earlier this year, Yadav had scored three consecutive points for the Golden Ducks against Australia. This time, he started calmly and showed restraint, using only his trademark flashy T20 shots at the end. His first 7 of his 10 balls were dot balls.
He hit three brilliant straight shots and reached 40 off 42 balls with little risk. When Cameron Green came on to bowl in the 46th over, Yadav used his trademark scoop shot for the first time in the match.
Green bowled a long ball to the off stumps, which Yadav shuffled inside and sent it over the wicketkeeper’s head for six points. He reached 50 off 47 balls for the first time in an ODI this year, but was dismissed shortly after for 50 off 49 balls.
KL Rahul remained unbeaten in 58 of 63 matches but India ended their chase with eight balls and five wickets to spare.
Earlier in the day, the entire Australian batting line-up had bowled for a total of 276, with only David Warner crossing the 50-mark. Meanwhile, Mohammed Shami recorded his ODI figures of 5-51, his best ever.
