Watch: Shreyas Iyer flicked Proteas speedster Gerald Coetzee for an eye-catching six over backward square-leg on day one (December 26, 2023) of the first Test between South Africa and India at SuperSport Park, Centurion.
With India at 80-3 after 24 overs, Gerald Coetzee continued to bowl six consecutive overs for South Africa. The fast bowler landed the first ball on Iyer’s pads and hit a tempting half-volley on his leg stump. Iyer released the ball into the air without hesitation, resulting in the ball flying over square leg six times.
Iyer reached the crease when India fell to 24-3 and found themselves in trouble in the morning session. He finished in style with a boundary through midwicket from Nandre Berger, but got a reprieve in the next over when Marco Jansen dropped a dolly at point off Keyso Rabada. He, along with Virat Kohli, steadied the ship towards India during the integration period and then they were both dismissed by a fiery Kagiso Rabada after lunch.
Rabada’s sniveling dismissal of Iyer for 31 (50) ended a 68-run stand and left the visiting team reeling at 92-4.
