Watch: Bangladesh wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan took a flying catch to dismiss New Zealand opener Finn Allen in the first Bangladesh vs New Zealand ODI in Mirpur yesterday (September 21).
Bangladesh won the toss and won the first match of the three-match ODI series. Mustafizur Rahman sparked the host team’s bowling and shone with the new ball, in the first game he took two wickets and rocked New Zealand.
Both of the wickets Mustafizur took were in similar fashion, forcing Finn Allen and Chad Bowes back to wicketkeeper Nurul. While Bowes’ capture was relatively routine, Nurul had to dive full body to capture Allen.
The ball Mustafizur bowled was pitched to leg stump and the right-handed Allen turned an angle to push it in, but it hit the thick outside edge and threatened to fall between the wicketkeeper and the wicketkeeper. Second slip to advise. However, Nurul was wary and jumped as fast as he could to the right and caught the ball with both hands, giving Bangladesh their first breakthrough in the seventh over.
Mustafizur bowled the next over in a similar manner in the ninth over, giving New Zealand a 16-2 lead. A 97-run partnership between Will Young and Henry Nichols then stabilized the atmosphere for the visiting team, with Nichols being dismissed for 44 in 28 innings overs, leaving New Zealand’s score at 113-3.
Only six overs were possible as rain fell in the 34th over of New Zealand’s innings, spoiling the match.
