Watch: Tailender Shoaib Bashir tried to review his dismissal despite being castled by Ravindra Jadeja on day three of the fifth Test between India and England in Dharamshala.
England were in tatters after going into bat in their second innings with a 259-run deficit. R Ashwin took the new ball and neutralised the top three within 10 overs. A certain defeat looked inevitable for the tourists thereafter as wickets tumbled with Joe Root playing a lone hand at the other end.
With England’s tail wagging at 184-8 and Bashir batting then on 13 off 28 alongside Root (78 off 119), Jadeja was asked to bowl the 46th over. Jadeja landed the penultimate ball on a length and found some turn to rattle Bashir’s off-stump. Bashir’s hour-long rearguard action came to an end but the youngster apparently asked for a review without realising he was bowled.
Bashir signalled to go upstairs with his hands leaving Root at the non-striker’s end in splits. Root had his hand on his head in surprise and let his partner know that his timbers were shattered.
England lost their ninth before Root (84) holed out to Jasprit Bumrah at long-on off Kuldeep Yadav in an attempt to get to his 32nd Test century. England slumped to an 64-run innings defeat to hand India a 4-1 series win.
India lost the opening Test in Hyderabad, before winning matches in Visakhapatnam, Rajkot, Ranchi and now Dharamshala.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored 712 runs at 89 scored the most runs in the series with R Ashwin picking up the most wickets (26) between either side. Kuldeep was awarded the Player of the Match, while Jaiswal won the Player of the Series.
