Watch: Angelo Mathews struck with the third ball of his third over back in ODI cricket for Sri Lanka, nicking off Dawid Malan to precipitate a spectacular England top-order collapse in Bangalore.
Angelo Matthews has been named in Sri Lanka’s World Cup squad after Matisha Pathirana missed the remainder of the tournament due to injury. He entered the starting eleven immediately for the match against England, his first ODI since March of this year.
He was bowled in the powerplay, with Jonny Bairstow taking a single off the first ball and Dawid Malan scoring a point from the second ball. Matthews threw a third slider over the left-handed hitter, and Malan flicked it wide of the off stump. The ball approached the bat and went straight to Kusal Mendis who was behind the stumps, who immediately threw it up in celebration.
The referee did not move, but Mendis immediately decided to review the match. UltraEdge showed big cuts on Malan’s outside edge and had to go back to his locker room 28 of 25 times.
This wicket caused a major collapse in the top order for England, with Joe Root also lost to Matthews in the powerplay. They lost him 85-5 in the 17th round and a disastrous fight ensued.
