UFC Veteran Criticizes Boxing After Francis Ngannou’s Defeat to Tyson Fury
A significant number of fans strongly believed that Ngannou was unfairly judged given his dominance throughout most of the 10 round bout. Prominent figure in the UFC, Chel Sonnen, expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict of the crossover boxing match between Tyson Fury and Francis Ngannou, even calling the boxing a lack of credibility. Sonnen said in his statement:
“He had no chance of winning in boxing.
I had two interactions with Francis Ngannou, and neither was pleasant. One of his was security. So I would like to clarify my bias. Still, a person’s dedication and overall performance deserves recognition and should be evaluated appropriately. This is terrible, what they did to him.
Francis completely overwhelmed him. This is heartbreaking for me, but not because of my strange relationship with Frances. This is very sad because I have always respected boxing. “If boxing turns out to be fake — and I don’t mean the calls were rigged — then it can’t be a real sport,” Sonnen said.
Expectations for Ngannou to go 10 rounds were low, but the debate over unfair calls in boxing led to praise for his debut and fight against Fury. Unfair decisions can stain the sport and reduce fan interest in future fights, highlighting the important role of scoring in matches.
