Nigeria started their 2026 World Cup qualification with two games against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
The first game was against Lesotho’s Crocodiles at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja. On paper, the Super Eagles were seen as the favorites as there was a huge difference in quality and pedigree between the two teams. But they were cheating when he was held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa.
But in this match, Nigeria created more chances, dominated the ball and looked like the better team. However, it was only their lack of positivity in his final third that settled for a draw.
But the second game wasn’t as good as the first. Despite playing on neutral ground at Rwanda’s Stade Huey, Nigeria failed to show their quality. Zimbabwe could not escape them and created many chances.
The Zimbabweans were finally rewarded with a first half goal from a free kick. However, Kelechi Iheanacho scored a goal in the second half, and Jose Peseiro’s side were finally able to snatch a point from Rwanda.
With the two points, Nigeria will only get two of the six points available from the first two games of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. This caused an uproar, especially in Nigeria, as fans believe the team has the potential to do more. Some are calling for Peceiro to be removed from his post in the Super Eagles.
But Nantes star Simon, who was part of the team, called for calm
“It’s not the result I wanted, but I’m sure we’ll bounce back” Simon wrote< /a >.
“We are very sorry to our fans, but you deserved better than your performances against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.”
“We have overcome so many challenges, and now is the time to reflect and come back stronger.”
The next World Cup qualifier will be held in 2024 and fans will be hoping that the Super Eagles will be back in action by then.
