Sri Lanka have replaced the injured Matheesha Pathirana with Angelo Mathews in their 2023 World Cup squad.
This is the latest in a series of injuries for Sri Lanka in this tournament. Wanindu Hasaranga, who was injured before the tournament, had to be removed from the squad as a leg twister required surgery.
Before the third match, they also lost their captain Dasun Shanaka. They replaced Shanaka with Chamika Karunaratne in the team, made Kusal Mendis their captain and later added Angelo Matthews and Dushmantha Chameera to the traveling reserves.
Fast bowler Pathirana injured his shoulder during the match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan and missed the match against Netherlands. His subsequent MRI scan revealed a contusion in his shoulder.
A veteran of three World Cups, Matthews has scored 5,865 ODI runs on Indian soil, averaging an impressive 121.60 in 11 ODIs at a strike rate of 97. However, the last of these matches took place in his 2017 year.
In fact, Matthews has only played four ODIs since the pandemic. He scored 35 points. He also bowls in the seam – his 120 ODI wickets are proof of that – but he has no international wickets since the pandemic.
