Sourav Ganguly: I Convinced Rohit Sharma To Be India Captain, He Wasn’t Keen

Former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly revealed that he had to convince Rohit Sharma to take over as Indian captain in the 2021/22 season.

India has performed phenomenally in the 2023 World Cup, winning all eight matches so far. Captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid, who are currently at the helm of this all-conquering unit, have both been appointed for the 2021-22 season.

Sourav Ganguly, who led India from 2000 to 2005, served as BCCI president when Ravi Shastri’s tenure as head coach ended. Around the same time, Virat Kohli resigned his T20I and Test captaincy and was removed as ODI captain.

It is well known that Dravid was initially reluctant to take on the role of Shastri. In an interviewon November 9, Ganguly told Kolkata TVthat Rohit also has no interest in replacing Virat Kohli.

“Rohit Sharma was not interested [in becoming captain]. I had to convince him. I even went so far as to say that if he didn’t agree, I would make him captain.” Ganguly told the channel.

Ganguly explained why he was interested in Rohit as follows: He is the perfect person to lead India after Virat Kohli steps down and I am not surprised by what I see. ”

Ganguly said Rohit’s initial reluctance was due to the fact that he had “played a lot of cricket, top in Test cricket, ODIs, T20Is and IPL” and had a lot of things he wanted to do. I suspected that they were related.

However, Ganguly believed that the Indian captain’s job was more important than anything else and convinced Rohit to take up the role across formats.

India have already secured the top spot in the points standings and will play their last league match against Netherlands on November 12th.
