Shubman Gill Breaks Record For The Fastest Batter To 2,000 ODI Runs

Shubman Gill became the fastest batter to reach 2,000 runs in ODI history during the ongoing India-New Zealand clash at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala today (October 22).

Gill came into this match having scored 1,986 career ODI runs and needed 14 more runs to reach the 2,000-run mark. He achieved it in the seventh over of a run chase, managing the drive through the extra cover of Trent Boult, becoming the fastest batsman in history to reach the milestone.

The previous record was held by South Africa’s Hashim Amla, who scored 2,000 runs in 40 ODI innings. Gill accomplished this in just 38 innings. This was two innings faster for him than Amla.

After making his ODI debut in 2019 against New Zealand in two ODIs, Gill has transformed his game in the white-ball format and has performed admirably over the last few years.

As of 2022, his ODI run record is 1,961 runs in just 35 innings, with an average of 70.03 runs and a strike rate of 104.08 at the time of writing. Out of 35 innings, he surpassed his 516 innings, including six centuries and his second century.

Gill’s dominance in the ODI format has been exceptional in his young career so far, topping the list of highest batting averages of batsmen who have scored over 2,000 runs across formats. In fact, he is the only player on the list whose average score is higher than his 60 (at the time of writing he is 64.82). His second person on the list is none other than Virat his Kohli. He averages 58 points in his 286 matches and is one of the great players of this format.

Gill had a tough start to the 2023 World Cup, missing the first two games due to dengue fever, but quickly recovered and came back strong. He scored his fifty against Bangladesh in Pune and will look to increase his contribution as the tournament progresses.

In the ongoing match between India and New Zealand, Gill was dismissed for hitting 26 off 31 balls.
