Rohit Sharma: Shubman Gill Is ’99 Percent’ Available For Pakistan Clash

Rohit Sharma confirmed that India opener Shubman Gill is “99 percent” fit for the 2023 World Cup India-Pakistan clash, to be played at Ahmedabad on October 14.

India is expected to have Shubman Gill back in the scheduled matches after missing the first two matches of the tournament due to dengue fever. Gill, who has an enviable winning streak in 2023, missed the World Cup opener between India and Australia in Chennai on October 8 and was subsequently hospitalized after his platelet count dropped. He did not travel with the Indian team to Delhi, the venue for India’s match against Afghanistan.

However, after being dischargedGill flew to Ahmedabadand completed a closed-door indoor training session. Questions remained over his fitness and availability, which captain Rohit answered in the pre-match press conference.

Rohit Sharma admitted to reporters that Gill, his first-choice opening partner, is “99 per cent” available for the match against Pakistan and should again contribute as an opening batsman on Saturday.

Earlier, Yuvraj Singh motivated his Punjab State teammate Gill by reminding him of the adversity he had to face. Yuvraj himself played matches with dengue fever and was diagnosed with cancer at the 2011 World Cup where he was named the tournament’s player of the year.

If Gill plays, he is expected to be included in the eleven in place of Ishan Kishan. Kishan did not get the desired start in the World Cup. He scored a duck against Australia but he recovered to score a run-a-ball 47 against Afghanistan.

This is also Gill’s first senior World Cup match in white-ball cricket. He was the player of the tournament when India won his U19 World Cup in 2018.
