Roger Federer calls for Djokovic and Alcaraz after Team Europe ‘destroyed’ in Laver Cup

Roger Federer has called on the likes of Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz to join Team Europe next year after suffering a crushing defeat at the Laver Cup.

Federer co-founded the Laver Cup in 2017. The event sees European teams compete against world teams in a different host city each year.

Team Europe won the first four exhibition tournaments last year, and Team World continued that success with a 13-2 victory in Vancouver last weekend.

Federer was present for the entire event and gave his verdict on the result to Eurosport: “They destroyed Team Europe. Team He World played great and really brought the energy.

“Everyone got points, and the doubles were the stronger team. They showed speed in the individual matches and were well prepared. They definitely deserved the win.”

The event was decided on Sunday with double wins for Francis Tiafoe and Ben Shelton over Hubert Harkas and Andrei Rublev, leaving Casper Ruud as the only winner on the European team.

Next year, the Laver Cup will return to Europe and be held in Berlin. Federer has made it clear that in 2024 he already has high expectations for the team he has played for four times.

“Even though we speak German, we’re really looking forward to Berlin, a city we don’t know very well,” Roger Federer said. “I can’t wait to get there. I think it’s great to bring tennis back to Germany. I think we’ll have more energy as Team Europe.”

But he wants more familiar names added to next year’s ranks. Sascha Zverev is perfect for the German market.

“Players like (Holger) Loon really hurt Team Europe. Loon and (Stefanos) Tsitsipas are leaving. (Daniil) Medvedev would be great. I think (Andrei) Rublev I like watching it, so maybe someone will join in.”

Nine of the current top 10 players in the ATP rankings are European, with the exception of American Taylor Fritz, who is ranked 8th in the world.

World No. 1 Djokovic has already competed in the event twice, but Alcaraz is yet to make his debut.
