R Ashwin Withdraws From Third Test Match Due To A Family Emergency | IND v ENG

R Ashwin has withdrawn from the Rajkot Test match with immediate effect after play on Day Two due to a family medical emergency.

The BCCI issued a statement hours after the second day’s match, announcing Ashwin’s withdrawal from the team and requesting privacy. Ashwin took his 500th Test wicket in the second evening session and England finished with 207 for 2, still 238 runs behind India’s first innings total.

BCCI’s statement is as follows: “ span>Ravikhandran Ashwin has withdrawn from his Test team with immediate effect due to a family medical emergency. At this difficult time, the Board of Control for Cricket in India ( BCCI) and the team fully support Ashwin. p>

“BCCI offers its wholehearted support to our cricket champions and their families. The health and well-being of our players and their families is of paramount importance. We ask that the privacy of Ashwin and his family be respected at this time.

With Ashwin’s withdrawal, India may end up playing the rest of the Test match with 10 players. With up to three days left of the match in Rajkot, India still has eight wickets left to contest England’s first innings.

The right-arm spinner has taken 10 wickets in the series so far and finished the day with 1 win and 37 losses after bowling 7 overs in the second evening session. He also scored a valuable run for India in his first innings, bowling 37 off 89 balls. He shared his 79-run stand with debutant Dhruv and Jurel for his eighth wicket of the morning session.
