Piastri agrees F1 2023 was bigger roller coaster than expected

Oscar Piastri says the 2023 F1 season has been a roller coaster and more than he expected, and says Andrea Stella is up to the task.

Piastri’s first season in F 1 was a wild ride for McLaren. It started and ended very differently. After the car was vastly improved, the Australian picked up the pace despite his rookie talent continuing to learn.

As he says, having seen everything a Formula 1 driver goes through in their entire career, it’s been quite a rollercoaster and more than he expected. “It’s definitely been a bigger roller coaster than he expected,” Piastri told the media. “I knew there would be ups and downs. Maybe not so low at the beginning and not so high at the end, but I really learned a lot.

“I feel like I’ve basically been in every possible situation other than fighting for a championship.” So this year has been a good learning year. As a team we are learning to be at the forefront again, so we are very excited. This is not the situation we have been experiencing for 10 years. It’s great to have this conversation again and consider these scenarios.

“For me, it’s a real honor to be able to compete on the front lines so early in my career. Throughout my F1 career, where I’ve competed in 22 races, some people don’t have that opportunity. I’m very, very grateful. And we look forward to being able to do this more often for years to come,” concluded Piastri.

Team principal Stella continued to praise Piastri, highlighting some of the achievements of the 2023 F1 season. The Italian spoke about how the Australian quickly adapted to a circuit like Suzuka, where he had never raced before, and finished on the podium.

On the route I knew I was on the right path. The only drawback was the tire management scenario. “He finished second on the grid at a circuit like Suzuka, but you have to think a little bit about the magnitude of that result,” Stella said. A track like Suzuka is not only a fast track, but also a very narrow track, with gravel in places, so once you get too wide it becomes very unforgiving.

“Where I stand in different fields, in terms of speed, in terms of my ability to learn very quickly, in terms of working with engineers to extract the information I need to grow rapidly. In terms of his own awareness of the stages ahead: “From the time I get in an F1 car for the first time until I’m second on the grid, I don’t know anything about this track.”

“It is also quite extraordinary that he remains calm and in control, always performing to his fullest potential by not creating unnecessary stress. ”And you can understand why he was so successful in the junior category. On courses that Oscar is somewhat familiar with, or where Oscar can complete his FP1, FP2, FP3 sessions and the whole [schedule], he has been very competitive.

“But at a track he has never been to before, just running first and then sprinting shows the level he has to reach to be competitive is very high. ” “We are therefore very happy with the performance that Oscar was able to achieve after finishing his training, which is usually just three hours before the start of qualifying,” Stella concluded.
