Watch: Peter Handscomb stood his ground after edging a ball to third slip in the Sheffield Shield today (November 28), refusing to walk off until the umpires intervened.
Peter Hanscombe started in the first innings after his Victorian side lost 4-2 in the sixth round of the 2023/24 Sheffield Shield. After seven overs, Will Pucovski was also out, making it 21-3. Handscomb blocked his way to 7 of 23 balls and Brendan guided the ball from his Doggett to South Australian captain Jake his reeman at his third slip.
The ball landed deep to Lehmann’s right, so he had to move quickly to catch it before it hit the grass. He was able to grab the ball with both hands, jumped to the ground, and immediately threw the ball into the air in celebration. Although it seemed like an easy dismissal, Mr. Handscomb stood his ground.
As field players celebrated with high fives, Handscomb remained determined in the crease, shaking his head and pointing to where Lehman had caught the ball. Handscomb wondered if the catch was made cleanly, but replays showed the ball went directly into Lehmann’s hands.
However, Hanscom remained on the field even after replays proved the ejection was valid. As Hanscombe stood resolutely in the middle with non-striker Campbell Kellaway, Lehmann protested to the referee. After both referees intervened and spoke to him, Hanscombe left the pitch, clearly not yet satisfied with his sending off.
Handscomb’s wickets left Victoria with 4 for 29 before lunch at Adelaide Oval. However, Sam Harper’s incredible 100 balls (101 not out off 66 balls) resulted in a 187-5 win against Stamps on the opening day.
