Official: Southampton confirm departure of Super Eagles star on loan to Trabzonspor

Paul Onuachu joined Southampton from Belgian club KRC Genk in January but was unable to establish himself at St Mary’s Stadium, making 11 appearances last season could not score.

Championship club Southampton have announced that Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu will leave the club on a season-long loan to Turkish club Trabzonspor, Soccernet.ng reported.

The 29-year-old joined Southampton from Jupiler Pro League club KRC Genk in January for £18 million.

However, he could not get used to St Mary’s Stadium and failed to score a goal in 11 Premier League games last season, leading to the team being relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.

He made one appearance for Saints this season, coming on as a substitute in the 68th minute in a 3–1 loss to Gillingham in the Carabao Cup first round.

However, Southampton have confirmed the Nigerian striker will join Turkish club Trabzonspor on a season-long loan and will require international clearance to complete the deal.

 

Prior to his move to Southampton, Onuachu had a strong first half of the 2022/23 season, scoring 16 goals in 19 games and a total of 85 goals in 185 games during his four years in Belgium.

Onuachu was left out of Jose Peceiro’s Super Eagles squad that defeated Sao Tome and Principe in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final qualifier on Sunday.
