NPFL: Sporting Lagos continue journey at the top with a draw at Akwa

Sporting Lagos have enjoyed rapid growth in Nigeria, gaining promotion from the NNL to the top flight in just over a year.

Sporting Lagos continue their journey in the Nigeria Pro League with their match against Akwa United ending in a goalless draw, Soccernet.ng reports.

The vocal Lagosians won their league opener against Gombe United at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos and traveled to Anambra to take on Akwa United.

The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium has welcomed the newcomers of the NPFL. Akwa United lost their opening game against Bayelsa United thanks to Robert Mizo who scored a hat-trick.

Sporting played the match without a coach. His manager, a former Wari and his Wolves assistant, traveled to Namibia to take his coaching course and left management to his assistant.

The men’s team on the sidelines, with goal scorer Livio Ayemwenle in attendance, formed the same team from last Monday’s victory.

Chances were few and far between in the first half, with Christian Nwoukk keeping United at bay on several occasions when United looked animated. Meanwhile, Ocon gave the visitors a small chance to open the scoring on Saturday, but they narrowly missed it. p>

Super Eagles striker Junior Locosa came on after the 55th minute to revitalize Sporting’s attack, but it was the goalkeeper who repeatedly stopped Akwa’s attacks and kept the scoreless. It was Nuwok.

After a thrilling encounter between both teams, the referee added seven more minutes and blew the final whistle with neither team able to break the deadlock.

The draw gave the Naija Super 8 winners their second clean sheet of the season and gave Akwa United their first point.
