NPFL MD 2 Roundup: George Finidi’s Enyimba crumble in Gombe, Plateau outclass Heartland, Shooting Stars suffer in Benin

The Nigeria Professional Football League saw seven matches played on Sunday, in addition to the three matches already played on Saturday, reports Soccernet.ng.

Gombe United gave defending champions Enyimba and head coach George Finidi a tough football lesson after an impressive 2-0 win at the Pantami Township Stadium in Gombe.

Goals from Arakwe Chijoke and Ahmed Jimoh at the end of both halves were enough for the home side to bring Aba Elephants back into the game unscathed.

Bernard Mundy’s stunning overhead kick goal in the 12th minute was enough for Plateau United to record their first win of the season as they defeated Heartland FC 1-0 at the Jos International Stadium.

Fans at Lafia Township Stadium enjoyed an entertaining five-goal thriller as the Lovisters recorded a 3-2 victory over the visiting Sunshine Stars.

After a scoreless first half, the Lobi Stars, who scored twice in a 2-2 tie with Heartland in Game 1, took a two-goal lead thanks to two goals from Samuel Tiza.

Sunshine Stars had a brief fightback through Taiwo Abdulrafiu, but Ajibola Adeleke restored Robi’s two-goal lead five minutes into the match, with Michael Ollasi’s late goal. This proved to be only a consolation for the visiting team.

Niger Tornados ended last season’s poor run with a narrow 1-0 win over Rivers United at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna. Bashir Usman scored the only goal of the game from a penalty kick, playing just seven minutes.

Promoted side Sporting Lagos recorded the only positive result for away teams in the league this weekend, securing a goalless draw against Akwa United.

Sporting Lagos are at the top of the table with four points from their first two games.

There was no hiding place for Abia Warriors at the Kwara Sports Complex in Ilorin. Kwara United took advantage of a goal from Isaiah Eje at half-time to secure a narrow 1-0 victory.

The fierce battle in Ikene ended in Remostars’ favor, with the home team coming from behind to beat Enugrangers 2-1.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, Doma United dragged Bayelsa United into the elimination squad with a 2-0 win.

Shooting Stars suffered a similar fate at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City where Bendel Insurance lost 2-0 to Oluyole Warriors.

In the much-awaited northern derby, Kano Pillars showed their fans why they are the pride of the region as Mais Gida poked Katsina United into their pockets for a 1-0 victory.
