‘No leadership’– Mutiu Adepoju evaluates Super Eagles ahead of AFCON tournament

Nigeria’s Super Eagles lost 1, won 4 and drew 3 in the matches played in 2023.

Former Super Eagles player Mutiu Adepoju has given an insight into the Super Eagles team and shared his thoughts on Jose Peseiro’s coaching tenure, reports Soccernet.ng.

Peseiro has been criticized by Nigerian football fans for the team’s recent disappointing performances, raising concerns about winning a fourth African Cup of Nations trophy.

The three-time AFCON winners faced the challenge of qualifying wins against Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone, and more recent 1-1 draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe ahead of the match tournament. I had doubts about my condition.

Amid calls from Nigerian soccer fans for Peseiro to be sacked, the Nigeria Football Association pointed out that it would be difficult to replace him due to his large salary.

Adepoju, in an exclusive interview with Soccernet.ng, expressed concerns about the team’s productivity in the AFCON under the current circumstances. He also stressed that Peseiro’s dismissal may not be an immediate solution.

“Well, first of all, I don’t know what that state is or what that condition is, and I don’t want to get into the question of whether or not I should do it. But I don’t know yet. Here’s the thing, it might not be productive with this coach, that’s my opinion. “This has been done before (the firing of Gernot Rohr before the AFCON tournament) and at this point it’s not going to be productive.” “I don’t think that’s the solution,” he commented.

The team is made up of players who have played in European leagues, such as Victor Osimhen, who finished 8th in the 2023 Ballon d’Or, and Victor Boniface, who has established himself as a prominent striker in the German Bundesliga . p> p>

Mr Adepoju, who is known as the “Principal”, praised the talent of the Super Eagles team. However, he noted that a lack of cohesion and leadership within the team can make a big difference.

“The current Super Eagles team, I mean, good players. We see them every week at their club. What’s important is your skills and how you put everything together. It’s just a question of whether we can achieve it.”That’s the question. But they are definitely doing well at the club.

“Cohesiveness, teamwork and, I don’t want to say leadership on the field, we have some good players, but we don’t have leadership and things aren’t working well.” Initiative And there’s bound to be some actors who go, “Oh, this is what’s happening, we need to change this and everything,” and sometimes that works out. I don’t know because he’s not around. I’ve never been to their camp, so I don’t know what’s going on. But they need to get their act together and everyone needs to work together,” he said.

The Super Eagles are expected to prepare in Saudi Arabia before heading to Ivory Coast for the AFCON season as they aim to surprise Nigerian fans with a strong performance.
