As Nigeria prepares to face Argentina, El Salvador, South Africa and Benin Republic in upcoming soccer matches, there is uncertainty over the Super Eagles’ coaching situation, reports Soccernet.ng.
José Peseiro’s contract ends after the 2023 African Cup of Nations, and discussions are ongoing regarding a possible contract extension.
The team reached the semi-finals of the 34th Nations Cup and fulfilled the conditions for a contract extension, but negotiations remain unresolved.
The absence of a coach is a major challenge for the Super Eagles as they prepare to face Argentina and El Salvador in March and 2026 World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic in late June .
Opinions within the Nigerian football community are divided. Some support keeping Peseiro, while others argue for considering a local coach for financial reasons.
Despite the uncertainty, Nigeria vice-captain William Troost-Ekong expressed support for Peseiro, citing the team’s performance in reaching the AFCON 2023 finals.
“Yes, I think the players are happy with him. It’s meaningful to reach the final and it also means we can go further,” the PAOK defender told CNN.
Unresolved salary issues further complicate contract negotiations, amid speculation linking Peseiro with coaching positions in other regions, including the Algerian national team and Zamalek SC.
Although the Nigeria Football Association has resolved the issue of salary arrears, delays continue to be made in finalizing Peseiro’s contract extension.
With Emmanuel Amuneke emerging as a possible coaching candidate, it is imperative that the Nigeria Football Association resolves the coaching situation quickly to ensure proper preparation for the upcoming matches.
