Nick Kyrgios ‘very thankful’ for Andy Murray after mental health struggles

Nick Kyrgios has spoken out about his mental health issues during his time on the ATP Tour and thanked Andy Murray for looking after him during this time.

Kyrgios was plagued by various injuries in 2023, which resulted in the Australian playing just one game for Stuttgart all year.

The 2022 Wimbledon finalist recently competed in the ATP Finals, albeit in a different role as a commentator for Tennis Channel.

And the 28-year-old spoke about his past mental health issues in an interview with Piers Morgan.

“To be honest, it was pretty dark,” Kyrgios revealed. “I was winning Pro Tour tournaments, drinking every night, hurting myself, burning my arms, cutting myself for fun. I became addicted to pain. I hated myself. I hated waking up and finding myself as Nick Kyrgios.”

The former No. 13 also spoke about the role Murray played in his life, with Murray reportedly warning Kyrgios’ manager about the self-harm the Australian had inflicted on himself.

And Kyrgios showed how grateful he is to Murray. “Andy has always been a big supporter of mine. As soon as I got on tour, he saw the work in progress and took me under his wing. Then later on in my career, I realized that even though I didn’t expect to be guided or follow my own path, he was someone who always looked out for me.

“He saw it (self-harm) and said, ‘What’s that on your arm?’ It was pretty bad at that point. Andy obviously advised me on this. But I was really stuck at that time, so I didn’t listen. Of course I’m very grateful. I’m very grateful to him.”

Kyrgios talked about how he has used his past hardships to help others. I am like a lighthouse to those who are suffering. Even if they feel overwhelmed and turn to drink or drugs, they open up and feel like I can handle it too. ”

He continued as follows: “That was the most powerful thing in my career. People coming to me with real problems. I hurt myself and really want to commit suicide.

“I have conversations with these people. Sometimes I’ve talked to these people on the phone. “This has really made a big difference and I’m very proud.”
