Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed Najmul Hossain Shanto as the team’s 16th ODI captain. He will lead Bangladesh in the final match of his three-match ODI series against New Zealand on September 26 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
After the first ODI was canceled due to rain, the New Zealand team comfortably won the second match against the hosts by 86 runs, taking a 1-0 lead for the third straight match. Bangladesh openers Tamim Iqbal and Liton Kumar Das are likely to be rested for the third ODI against the Black Caps.
Nazimul Hossain Shanto, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mehdi Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam all returned to the Bangladesh team after missing the first two matches due to vacation. Bangladesh will complete their preparations forODI World Cup with the final match on Tuesday.
Bangladesh’s experienced all-rounder Mahmudullah is likely to be included in the 15-man World Cup squad after scoring an impressive 49 points in the second match against New Zealand.
“He (Mahmudullah) was great and we had a bit of a partnership with him. His intentions were good and you never thought he would come after a gap of six or seven months. He looked good and was great defensively. He looked good, whenever the ball was handed to him he tried to give his best and personally I think he did really well,” Tamim said after the second ODI.
Mahmudullah has been one of the most experienced players in the Bangladesh team for many years. This veteran’s best performance was at his 2015 ODI World Cup in Australia. There, he played an important role for the team in this tournament and was able to handle the ball well even in subcontinent-like conditions.
The Bangladesh team is expected to go into the tournament as an underdog as they have quality players in their squad whose experience could come in handy in the Asian situation.
The team has experienced players like Litton Das, Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim, and they hope to use their experience to perform well in the ODI World Cup to be held in India .
