Morne Morkel Quits As Pakistan Bowling Coach

Pakistan bowling coach Morne Morkel has resigned due to the team’s poor performance in the recent 2023 ICC World Cup. Pakistan finished the tournament in fifth place with just four wins out of nine matches.

Former South African pacer Morne Morkel has been hired as Pakistan’s bowling coach in June 2023. He previously represented Namibia at the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. He is his bowling coach for Lucknow Supergiants in the IPL and his Durban Supergiants in SA20.

Morkel was the successor to Shaun Tait, but Pakistan’s bowling performance in the 2023 World Cup was so poor that he decided to resign.

The Pakistan Cricket Board is expected to announce his replacement in due course. “Pakistan’s next assignment will be a three-match Test series against Australia, scheduled to be held in Australia from December 14, 2023 to January 7, 2024,” the PCB said in a statement.

This could be due to the poor bowling performance of Pakistan team in the recent ICC World Cup 2023. Haris Rauf conceded 533 runs with 16 wickets in nine matches, the most by a bowler in a single World Cup tournament. Shaheen Afridi, the spearhead of Pakistan’s attack, has conceded 481 runs for 18 wickets in nine matches.

Pakistani spinners Iftikhar Ahmed, Osama Mir, Mohammad Nawaz and Shadab Khan took a total of just 12 wickets in the tournament.
