Mitchell Starc stopped in his delivery stride before the fourth ball of the Australia-Sri Lanka match to give Kusal Perera a pre-delivery non-striker’s end run out warning at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow today (October 16).
Kusal Mendis, who captained Sri Lanka in an ODI for the first time, won the toss and was chosen to bat first in Lucknow. strong>Mitchell Starc took over as his number one for Australia as usual. It’s safe to say his first six-ball was full of action.
The first ball of the game was a quick in-swing toke crusher that Pathum Nissanka managed to hit. However, the Australians were unconvinced and felt that they might have struck their own field first. They asked for a review, but ultimately failed as replays revealed it was actually just a bat.
Two balls later, as Starc was about to bowl, he stopped and looked at non-striker Kusal Perera, who had come out of the goal area. Stark points at him and warns Kreese to stay back. Failure to do so, he warned, could result in continued run-outs on the non-striker’s side.
“In fact, he told Kusal Perera not to leave any creases. That’s natural,” Nasser Hussain said on the show. “He told the umpires and now he told the batters: ‘Stay in your corner on this end.’
This is not the first time Starc has warned batters not to take outs on the non-striker’s side with the way he bats. During the second Test of the Australia-South Africa series at the MCG last year, Starc Teunis warned De Bruyn against leaving the crease too early in the non-striker’s side.
Today, Starc stopped the pace for the second time in the fifth over of the day after cautioning Perera in the first over of the day. Perera was inside the circle when Starc landed his bowling foot, but Perera started walking outside the circle again without looking at the bowler. However, Starc did not cancel the deposit this time either.
