Nigeria and Ethiopia will meet for the second time in a week for a place in the next qualifying round for the 2024 Olympic Games, scheduled to be held in Paris, France.
The Super Falcons held the East Africans to a 1-1 draw when the two countries met in Addis Ababa on Wednesday.
The Falcons were heavy favorites to beat Lucy, but the East Africans took the lead with a lead of just under seven minutes thanks to Barky Amare’s goal.
Atletico Madrid midfielder Rashidat Ajibade scores a late volley to tie Nigeria, but despite the talents of Asisat Oshoala, Gift Monday and Ifeoma Onumonu, the Super Falcons are unable to score the winning goal was.
All is expected when the two teams meet again on Tuesday afternoon at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja as the winner is guaranteed to advance to the next stage.
However, the Super Falcons will be wary of the stubborn Ethiopians, as they last qualified for the Olympics 15 years ago in 2008.
Team News
Ethiopia are traveling to Nigeria for Sunday’s match and will hope to improve their chances against Nigeria on Tuesday.
Last week, the Falcons appeared to be unable to concentrate on the game against Lucy because head coach Randy Waldrum was away on other business in the United States.
The American coach was scheduled to lead the team in this second leg, but the Falcons will once again be without his expertise as he remains under contract with the Nigeria Football Association.
In addition to Waldrum, the Super Falcons will also miss the experience of senior team members such as Ashley Plumptre, Onome Ebi, Harimotu Ayinde and Oshinachi Ohare.
However, the team can still count on the talents of Oshoala from Barcelona, Chiamaka Nnnadoji from Paris FC, Demehin Oluwatosin, Michel Aloji and newly invited Rinsola Babajide.
The winner of the match between Nigeria and Ethiopia will face Cameroon or Uganda in the next qualifying stage.
