Marcus Stoinis laughed in Yashasvi Jaiswal’s face after a comical mix-up saw Ruturaj Gaikwad run out in the first over of India’s chase in the first T20I of their series against Australia.
Josh Inglis scored a quick hundred in Australia’s innings and India were set for 209. Gaikwad and Jaiswal started the chase, with Jaiswal hitting a four and a six in the first three of Stoinis’ opening over. While preparing for his fourth delivery, Jaiswal played a slow rebound deep on the leg side.
He and Gaikwad ran slowly through, and then they both turned and walked back a little. However, Jaiswal changed his partner’s mind mid-wicket and sent him back to the striker’s side. Nathan Ellis used his glove to throw the ball to Matthew Wade from deep. Wade dropped the ball, but there was still plenty of time to gather the ball and take it as Gaikwad had already given up his hopes of taking his place.
When Jaiswal turned back, it was soon discovered that he had sold his partner downstream. With his head thrown back and looking up at the sky, he trudged past Stoinis and back toward the non-striker side, where Stoinis was sure no disaster had occurred.
Stoinis placed himself directly in the path of Jaiswal, even though the first player turned away from Stoinis towards the unfolding run. As he turned around, Stonis laughed loudly in his face, confirming that Jaiswal knew exactly who was in charge of the wicketkeeper.
After the incident, Jaiswal’s innings was limited to just two overs. He slotted his ball from Matthew his shortstop straight to Steve Smith in the middle and scored 21 off 8 balls.
