Kumar Dharmasena and Nitin Menon will officiate the opening match of the 2023 ICC World Cup tournament between England and New Zealand on October 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
This match will be a repeat of the memorable final between these two teams four years ago. This final was won by England on boundary counting rules after both teams drew in a super over.
Kumar Dharmasena and Nitin Menon will be the reserve umpires for the match, Shahid Saikat will be the fourth umpire and Paul Wilson will be the TV umpire. The referee for this match will be Javagal Srinath.
Menon played in his first match of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup while Dharmasena created history in 2015 by appearing in and officiating the ICC Men’s 50-over Cricket World Cup final for the first time. Mr. Shahid will be the first referee of this tournament from Bangladesh.
Match Officials Announced For The ICC World Cup 2023
They are all members of a group of 20 officials appointed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to oversee World Cup matches. The group consists of 16 match officials and her four match referees, including 12 officials from the Emirates ICC Elite Umpires Team.
Six of these 16 umpires will be on stage at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup for the first time, and three will be returning after having officiated in previous finals.
Shahid and Alex Wharf are the only 14 returning players who did not officiate in Australia for the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Male Erasmus and Richard Kettleborough also return, having previously hosted the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Final in 2019 and 2015 respectively. Erasmus and Dharmasena were central players in both the 2019 Lord’s final and his 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final.
The referees for the four matches are Geoff Crowe, Andy Pycroft, Richie Richardson and Javagal Srinath, all former international players.
