‘It’s A Bit Far-Fetched’ – Eoin Morgan Refutes Speculation He Could Replace Mott As England White-Ball Coach

Eoin Morgan has ruled himself out from replacing Matthew Mott as England’s white-ball head coach, stating that Mott should be given “time to put right” his side’s dismal performance in the 2023 World Cup.

After England’s fourth consecutive loss to India, there was speculation in the media that Morgan might be appointed as coach of his former team after the tournament. The Daily His Telegraph article states: “There is no one in English cricket more qualified to restart this one-day team than the man who built it in the first place.”

However, in a conversation with commentator Sky Sports Cricket, < em >,Morgan has decided not to shortlist himself for the role and has backed Mott to lead the England team for next year’s T20 World Cup. “It’s a little far-fetched,” Morgan said of the speculation. “I’m very happy and hopeful about what I do for the future. I’m spending a lot of time at home with my young family right now, which is great and I’ll continue to watch I love it.

“Actually, I don’t think it’s a good idea to talk about changing captains and coaches at this point, just because there’s a lot of turnover in the World Cup. Why are they two-time world champions? Matthew Mott currently faces the biggest challenge of his career as an England manager, especially in the lead-up to next year’s T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and America. It is a challenge that will take time to overcome.”

However, Morgan continued that Mott’s position could be under pressure after failing to qualify for the Champions Trophy. England must finish in the top eight at the World Cup to secure a spot in the 2025 tournament. “If the England team fails to qualify for the Champions Trophy, people like Rob Key and the governing body the England and Wales Cricket Board will be under increasing pressure regarding his (Mott’s) work. You’re going to be exposed,” Morgan said. >

When England lost to India, Morgan suggested in his match commentary that problems within the dressing room may have been the cause of the poor performance. However, Mott denied these allegations in the post-match press conference, claiming that the team had become “incredibly close.”

“Everyone has the right to interpret my comments,” Morgan said. “It was very clear to me what was the cause of England’s performance in this World Cup and what were the contributing factors, because no one in the dressing room, the captain or the coach, was aware of the circumstances surrounding England’s performance. Because I can’t explain it. Please find it reflected there.”

England’s next match is against Australia in Ahmedabad on Saturday 4th November.
