“I need to play in a big league”- Gent star Gift Orban restates desire to leave Belgium

The Super Eagles striker has scored many goals for Gento but would like to move to another club

Super Eagles striker Gift Orbán has announced his intention to leave Belgian Jupiler League club Gent and join one of Europe’s top five leagues, reports Soccernet I am.

Orbán left Norwegian lower league side Stabek for Gent in January and has proven to be one of the club’s best signings. The 21-year-old has taken the club by storm, scoring 26 goals and two assists in his 31 games for the Buffaloes.

Orbán played a key role in Ghent’s qualification to the Europa Conference League last season and has continued his excellent performance this season.

Since joining Gento last season, the 21-year-old goalkeeper has frequently expressed his desire to move to the Premier League. He almost completed a move this summer after there were rumors of interest from Tottenham Hotspur, who were looking for a replacement for Harry Kane. However, his English First Division club decided to sign Brennan Johnson instead.

Following his continued goal-scoring exploits, Orbán earned his first call-up to the Super Eagles last week for Nigeria’s 2023 AFCON qualifier against Sao Tome and Principe on September 10.

Pre-match, Orbán expressed his excitement over the Super Eagles’ acquisition of the club. He also said he was looking forward to leaving Gento for a bigger club.

“I’m very happy to be here and give everything for my country. “This is very important to me,” Orbán told Brila FM

“I’m a striker and my job is to score goals. I have to score in every match. I’m in Belgium and I have to play in the big leagues. No.”

Orban hopes to make his national team debut on Sunday. However, he has Napoli hitman Victor Osimhen and Bayer Leverkusen star Victor Boniface with whom he could compete for the striker role.
