Forgotten Super Eagles star Kalu ends 25-month goal drought at Lausanne-Sport after Watford struggles

Former Gento star gets chance to restart career in Switzerland

Nigerian winger Samuel Kalu has scored his first goal in over two years, ending the worst period of his career, Soccernet.ng reported.

This goal was Cal’s first for Bordeaux since September 22, 2021, in a 3-3 draw away at Montpellier.

He left the French team to join Watford in January 2022, but struggled with fitness issues and only appeared in four league games as the Hornets were relegated from the Premier League in May.

Injuries and virus infections limited Cal to only nine championship games in the 2022-2023 season. The former Trencin star failed to score in his single season for the first time since coming to Europe in 2015.

In September Watford confirmed his move to Switzerland, where he signed a season-long loan deal with Lausanne Sport.

Cal has made five appearances for Lausanne Sport, making his second appearance on Saturday against the club’s city rivals.

Understandably, Cal’s problems with the club over the past two years have affected his chances with the Super Eagles.

The 26-year-old was a standout figure for the national team under Gernot Rohr, but has not played for Nigeria since 2021.

He came on as a substitute in the Super Eagles’ 2-0 victory over Liberia at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos in Matchday 1 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

Kalu’s last goal for Nigeria came in the Super Eagles’ 2-1 win over Benin in an African Cup of Nations qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo in November 2019. It was a wonderful winning goal that he contributed to.
