Explained: Why India Players Are Wearing Black Armbands For The England World Cup Game

Today (October 29), Indian players wear black armbands during the match against England at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.

Today (October 29), England won the toss-tos at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow and were declared number one. When Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill took to bat, they were seen wearing black armbands on their T-shirts.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the reason on X (Twitter): As a mark of respect to the legendary cricket, the Indian team will play in today’s (October 29) match against England. Left-arm spinner Bishan Singh Bedi, who passed away on October 24, will wear the black armband.

With 266 wickets in 67 Test matches at an average of 28.71, Bedi was widely regarded as the best exponent of left-arm orthodox spin bowling. He also had an extraordinary personality off the field, which he was known for.

The news of Bedi’s death broke during the World Cup match between Bangladesh and South Africa in Mumbai on October 24. Today’s match between India and England is India’s first match after his death, so India is using it as an opportunity to pay tribute to one of the country’s best cricketers by donning the black armband.

England, on the other hand, started the match well, securing an early wicket of Shubman Gill. Chris Woakes, who hasn’t had a particularly good record in previous World Cups, penetrated Gill’s defense with a nipbacker and was dismissed on nine of 13 balls.
