Electra Stumps, The Latest Cricketing Invention From BBL

Adding to their long list of inventions, the Big Bash League has introduced the new Electra Stamps, a set of multicolored illuminated stumps. These will be used in the 2023/24 edition of BBL.

Electra stamps were used in the Women’s Big Bash League, which was held ahead of this year’s men’s edition.

What are the BBL Electra Stumps?

Electra stamps are an evolution of traditional wooden stamps, consisting of an LED setup that lights up in specific ways depending on the game scenario. Eleven years ago, the Big Bash League introducedAmazing Balesthat light up when removed.

The Electra stamp is in some ways an extension of this breakthrough invention, replacing the typical red and white stamp that has long been a hallmark of BBL.

What do the lights signify?

The stump lights up in specific ways to indicate different scenarios.

  1. Out – Flashing red and then fire: Spots of blinking red light are followed by a bottom-to-top array of red, white and yellow lights, signifying fire.
  2. Fours – Colour shift: When a player hits a four, the lights on the stumps change colour one after another, shifting from purple to green, and so on.
  3. Sixes – Colour scrolling: When the batter hits a six, colours run from bottom to top, changing rapidly as they go up.
  4. No ball – Red and white scrolling: In alternating up and down motion, the stumps turn red and white, followed by the big loudspeaker siren, indicating a no-ball.
  5. Between overs – Purple and blue scrolling: As the player exchange ends, the stumps light up in pulsating blue and purple colours.
