David Warner was on 73 when had a narrow escape during Australia’s 2023 World Cup match against the Netherlands at Delhi, with the ‘full control’ law that saw a Mitchell Starc ‘catch’ chalked off during the 2023 Ashes at play.
Despite losing Mitchell Marsh (9) in the fourth over, David Warner and Steve Smith continued to run against Holland after Pat Cummins was elected to bat. They were 156-2 in 22.4 overs when Bas de Reid ran towards Warner.
De Reed threw a full throw from the outside. Warner broke through the cover but Roelof van der Merwe appealed by diving to his right after a short extra cover and making a great catch.
Umpires Michael Gough and Sharfdoula were unsure whether it was a clean catch. After discussion, they referred the decision to TV referee Mare Erasmus.
Replays showed that the ball almost certainly touched the grass when Van der Merwe’s hand touched the ground, and Erasmus did not rule out Werner.
His decision was based onArticle 33 (“If the ball is in the hands of a fielder, even if the hand holding the ball is touching the ground, the catch is fair. ). .””). The law also states that “the act of catching begins when the ball first makes contact with the fielder’s body and ends when the fielder has complete control of both the ball and his own.” . “You can get some movement.”
