Daniil Medvedev rubbishes strange Stefanos Tsitsipas ATP Finals claim

Daniil Medvedev said he disagrees with Stefanos Tsitsipas’ bizarre claim that winning the ATP Finals is a bigger achievement than winning the tournament.

Tsitsipas won the 2019 Tour Finals, but is still waiting for his first major. However, he reached two Grand Slam finals at Roland Garros and the Australian Open, losing both to Novak Djokovic.

He caused a bit of a surprise last week by claiming that the ATP Finals was actually a greater honor for both of them.

Medvedev has won both a major (2021 US Open) and the ATP Finals and says he has a very clear opinion on which success is greater.

In response to a question from Sofia Tartakova, Medvedev answered as follows. “For me, it’s even more difficult because there are five sentences.

“Yes, in the year-end championship you only play against the top 10 players from the first game, but you still have to win 5 games instead of 7.”

“It makes a difference. You can win four games and still win the title. Anyway, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but for me this is a grand slam.”

What did Stefanos Tsitsipas say comparing Grand Slams to ATP Finals?

Essentially, Tsitsipas believes this tournament is the most difficult tournament to win because you can only play against the best teams in the world at the ATP Finals.

“This is a real celebration,” Tsitsipas said. “The ATP Finals commemorates and celebrates the best in our sport.

“We all need to come together and play against each other and focus on the fact that we are the best in the world and try to fight for this mega trophy, the big prize in our sport. I can do it,” the Greek player said.

“It means a lot. To be honest, I would probably consider it a bigger issue than the slam. There’s a lot of prestige to this, and if we can conquer and win this, It will be an extremely valuable asset.”
