Awoniyi deserves to be first-choice- Nottingham Forest star speaks on rivalry with Super Eagles striker

Nottingham Forest have three strikers, but Awoniyi has proven to be the best.

Nottingham Forest striker Chris Wood has declared Super Eagles star Taiwo Awonih worthy of being the club’s first-choice striker, Soccer reports.

After two impressive years at Union Berlin, Nottingham Forest signed Awoniyi to a deal worth €20.5 million last summer.

The Super Eagles striker got off to a good start by scoring a goal on his debut for the club. But a few weeks into the season, he hit a lull. His injuries didn’t help either, and he was sidelined for about three months with a minor injury.

However, the Super Eagles striker recovered and showed his mettle by scoring in Nottingham Forest’s final five games of the season, helping them avoid relegation.

Awoniyi’s success last season cemented his place as Nottingham Forest’s number one.

Tricky Trees signed former Burnley talisman Chris Wood in the summer, but it was always clear that Awoniyi was number one. The 26-year-old Nigerian striker has shown his skills again this season, scoring in his first three games for Forest.

New Zealand striker Wood has started just one game for Forest this season and has had to play second fiddle. Still, Wood insists he and Awoniyi have a good relationship.

According to the Nottingham Post, Wood said: “From a personal point of view I would love to get more minutes, but I just have to keep working hard to get back into this team.” he said.

“T (Awoniyi) recently put on this jersey and he’s been playing really well so I’m going to push him hard in training and push him to the next level. I will keep trying to make it possible.”

“I’d like to think he feels the same way about me. There are no hard feelings about who starts and who follows. We all respect the manager’s decisions. , we want each other to do well.”

With Awoniyi currently injured, Wood will be given additional playing time. However, Steve Cooper has reiterated his belief in Awonih and once he recovers he will return to the starting lineup.
