ATP Rankings: Novak Djokovic returns to top; Matteo Berrettini drops again

Novak Djokovic has returned to world number one after capping off a stellar US Open in the customary post-tournament ATP ranking realignment.

The Serbian went into the tournament determined that he only needed to win one match to return to the top of the rankings, but in the end he won the tournament and secured his 24th major spot.

Carlos Alcaraz lost a lot of points because he couldn’t defend his title. That means there is a whopping 3,000 point lead over Djokovic, who has reached the finals of all four of his Grand Slams this year.

Daniil Medvedev, who lost in the final, also recorded a significant point gain, and these three players have definitely solidified their place as ATP’s top three after the US Open.

Alexander Zverev also returned to the top ten. This will be a welcome boost for him as he continues to rise up the rankings after his injury.

Big Movers

There is little doubt who was the star of the week. Grand Slams always involve dramatic changes in the rankings. This is mainly due to the number of points you can earn and how difficult it is to win first and then defend.

Ben Shelton made a particularly impressive jump in the Grand Slam, capping it off with a semi-final appearance in New York and moving up to No. 28 in the ATP Rankings.

At 20 years old, he jumped from 47 years old to 19 years old and broke into the world top 20 for the first time.

Thiago Seibos Wild (76th place with +30th place), Borna Gojo (77th place with +28th place) and Rinky Hijikata (82nd place with +28th place) also improved significantly.

But Matteo Berrettini’s tough year continues, as he falls 30 places to 66th place, and an ankle injury will further reduce his value in the ATP rankings.
