Andy Murray signs up for doubles tournament in unlikely pairing with top 10 star

Andy Murray had already signed up to play singles at the upcoming Brisbane International, but now he has also added a doubles tournament to his schedule.

Murray has signed a deal with world No. 8 singles player Holger Ruhn to play in Brisbane, a first for the pair, who are 16 years apart.

The Englishman played in just one doubles tournament in 2023, reaching the quarter-finals at the Washington Open with compatriot Dan Evans.

Due to Murray’s inactivity on the doubles court, his ranking remains at No. 573, but the former world No. 1 hopes to improve on that ranking in 2024.

Ruon also doesn’t play doubles regularly, playing just six games this year, and is actually ranked 579th, which is lower than Murray.

Not only have the two never faced each other in doubles, Murray has also never faced Loon in an official singles match.

The only previous meeting between the two was in a pre-Wimbledon exhibition match earlier this year, with the Dane defeating Murray 6-4, 6-4.

Murray praised the 20-year-old after the game. “He’s one of the best players in the world, so he knows exactly where his game is going and what he needs to work on.”

Rune then began working with former number one Boris Becker, a partnership that is expected to continue until 2024.

Other teams in the Brisbane International Doubles Tournament, which begins on December 31, include top seeds Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni, Sebastian Korda and Grigor Dimitrov, and Ben Shelton and Hugo Humbert.

Andy Murray is not known for his doubles success, but he has played a big part in Britain’s Davis Cup success along with his brother Jamie and is certainly very talented. Holger’s motivation behind this decision to play with his run is still unknown, but it could possibly be related to qualifying for the Paris Olympics.
