Andy Murray facing ‘extended period’ out after Miami injury blow
Andy Murray has revealed he is facing an ‘extended period’ out after suffering ankle ligament damage in his Miami Open defeat at Tomas Machac.
Murray pulled up in obvious pain after levelling the match at 5-5 in the third on Sunday. He was able to carry on but lost the match in a tiebreak.
He has now confirmed the injury is a significant one, with him damaging both his anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL).
“Yesterday towards the end of my match in Miami I suffered a full rupture of my ATFL and near full thickness rupture of my CFL,” Murray revealed via his social media channels.
“I will see an ankle specialist when I return home to determine next steps. Goes without saying this is a tough one to take and I’ll be out for an extended period.
“But I’II be back with 1 hip and no ankle ligaments when the time is right.”

Andy Murray was obviously very non-committal in his analysis of the injury, but it is probably not as serious as it initially sounds.
The injury Murray has is unlikely to require surgery and most medical sources suggest he will be looking at four to six weeks out, although it will almost certainly be a lot close to six weeks than four.
That means he will essentially be forced out of clay season but should, if all goes well, be fit for grass season.
At least, then, he should still be able to bow out of tennis on his own terms this summer as he had wanted to do, presumably at Wimbledon.
