Ademola Lookman’s dazzling display for Super Eagles vs. Sao Tome and Principe ignites hope at Atalanta

Ademola Lookman was one of the players who featured prominently in Nigeria’s 6-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations final qualifier.

The Atalanta striker scored a goal and provided an assist, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s impressive 16-0 aggregate victory over the island nation.

Lookman wasted no time in making his presence known on the pitch. Just 13 minutes into the match, he took an accurate corner kick that hit Napoli striker Victor Osimhen in the head, giving Nigeria the lead.

The former Everton winger doubled Nigeria’s lead with a smart right-footed shot that left the opposition goalkeeper with no chance.

The goal was Lookman’s first competitive goal in more than five months, ending a frustrating goal drought since April 1, when he last scored at Atalanta.

Ademola’s goal drought

Lookman’s journey to Serie A has been a roller coaster. In his debut season he made an impression with 13 league goals (two more in the Coppa Italia). That’s a record that outstrips all but four of his players in the league.

However, injuries hampered his scoring opportunities and his form faltered towards the end of the 2022/23 season.

Unfortunately, Lookman’s problems continued into the new season as he was unable to gain the trust of manager Gian Piero Gasperini. With no goals in his first three games of the season and limited playing time, it was clear that he was struggling to regain form and confidence.

A rejuvenating international break

However, the international break could be a turning point for Lookman.

When he returned to the Nigeria national team in Uyo, he was surrounded by familiar faces and a supportive atmosphere. His enthusiasm was contagious and evident as he trained alongside his international teammates.

National team head coach Jose Peceiro recognized Lookman’s contribution and gave him a starting spot against Sao Tome and Principe.

Lookman rewarded his faith with goals and assists, earning him the MVP of the Game award from 33ExportNigeria.

Lookman returned to Atalanta with new confidence and confidence.

His excellent dribbling skills and sharp finishing skills will contribute to his comeback.

With the clash between Atalanta and Fiorentina looming on September 17th, if Lookman can replicate the form he showed in Nigeria, it won’t be long before he returns to starting and goal-scoring form for Bergamo.
