2024 Women’s Olympic qualifiers: Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Morocco face tough third-round hurdles

The second round of matches for the 2024 CAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament has concluded and eight teams have advanced to the third round.

Nigeria defeated Ethiopia 5-1 on aggregate, setting up a match against Cameroon for a place in the fourth round.

The Super Falcons held the Ethiopians to a 1-1 draw in Addis Ababa, but the nine-time African champions registered an impressive 4-0 win in Abuja, sending Lucy home empty-handed.

Cameroon were on the verge of elimination after losing 1-0 to Uganda in the first leg of the second round.

However, the Lionesses completed a stunning comeback with an impressive 3-0 win in Douala (after extra time), setting up a draw with Nigeria.

Unlike Cameroon, Ghana had an easy time against Benin, winning 5-0 on aggregate.

The Black Queens won 0-3 away in Cotonou and won 2-0 in the second leg at the Accra Sports Stadium.

However, Zambia could do little to qualify as they completely defeated Mali after the latter’s exit from the tournament.

After Ivory Coast withdrew, Tunisia also advanced to the third round under the same conditions.

Zambia have their hands full as they face Ghana in the third round.

Namibia were no match for Morocco on the pitch, but Atlas Lionesses won twice, 2-0 at home and away, for a 4-0 aggregate victory.

The true test of Tunisia’s mettle is expected to come in a thrilling North African derby against 2022 WAFCON finalists Morocco.

Botswana, ranked 150th in the FIFA rankings, was eliminated from the tournament by Tanzania, ranked 152nd.

Tanzania boosted their confidence with a 2-0 win in Dar es Salaam and completed the task with a hard-fought 0-1 win at the Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone.

South Africa defeated the Democratic Republic of Congo 3-1 on aggregate and much of the credit went to star striker Thembi Kgatlana.

Kugatlana scored the decisive equalizer in a 1-1 first-leg draw in Kinshasa, and the former Atlético Madrid striker scored twice to lead the reigning African champions to a 2-0 victory in Johannesburg. I decided.
